“Korra,” he greeted, allowing himself a quick smile. His voice was hoarse and nasally; his pale nose painted red, signifying a cold. The merciless, blistering wind wasn’t doing much justice either. “Shouldn’t you be inside where it’s toasty?” He inquired with a perked brow, as he gestured with his hand toward the Women’s Dormitory. “I’m a prime example of what will happen to you if you linger around any longer,” Howl jested with a wry smile.

Korra looked up from her twiddling hands at the sound of her name being called. Her eyes glanced around until they fell upon a familiar figure. “Howl!” she greeted with a bright smile and a few exuberant waves. By the looks of it, he had somehow caught a cold. If the red to his nose didn’t make it obvious that he was sick - she had heard a few stories about a certain reindeer with a glowing red nose, not like that had anything to do with the current situation- then she wasn’t sure what would. “I don’t get sick,” she stated as-a-matter-of-fact. “Dress warmly and you should be A-okay!” She even pulled her parka closer to her body for added emphasis.

“Besides, you know how much I hate staying in doors,” and wasn’t that the truth? Koh forbid that they would make her sit inside for an extended period of time… ever. “If anybody should be inside getting warm and toasty, though, it’s you,” Korra smiled and reached upwards to lightly poke at his nose. “Wear a scarf! Drink some hot chocolate-” she glanced around before she looked back up towards him. “Actually, are you free now?”

The rain pitter-pattered against the window-pane. It was around noon-time, she guessed, but the sky was so dark, the clouds were so thick and the sun was so… not there- it might as well have been eleven in the evening.

Contrary to popular belief, even though the rain fell under the jurisdiction of her most natural element, she felt gloomy. There weren’t many days where Korra could willingly sit and do nothing, and today was definitely not one of those days.

A sigh escaped her lips as she thumped her head against the window.

Unbeknownst to her, a very familiar figure had crept into her room and tip-toed behind her. Without missing a beat, a pair of arms gently wrapped around her waist and Korra yelped in surprise.

She was about to demand to be released when he buried himself into the crook of her neck. The will to oppose left her.

A faint smell of burnt wood emitted from his body, and she knew he had been helping Bolin with his pro-bending team. Even though it was no longer his career, he still made time in his hectic schedule for his brother.

“Missed you today,” he mumbled from behind.

The corners of her lips quirked upwards into an amused smile.

“Missed you too,” she said, leaning her head back against his head.

A moment passed and - “Let’s go spar!”

If Mako had been anybody else, his jaw would have hit the ground. Instead, he let go of her waist, took a step back, crossed his arms and gave her one of his deadpan looks.

“I don’t know if you’ve noticed, Korra, but it’s sort of… I don’t know, raining outside.”

Mako made a gesture towards the window with his head.

“You know… precipitation and fire-benders don’t really mix…”

Korra turned around and shot him a look.

“No way! And here I thought we were getting snowed in!”

Mako blanched at her sarcastic retort while she continued to eye him expectantly.

“Fine.”

Oh, the things he did for love.

Day By Day (WIP)

It was the year 2020 when she learned that she might be the last person alive.

It was the year 2021, Christmas day, and the winter was not as cold as she last remembered it.

It was the year 2021, the day of New Years Eve, and the silence failed to bother her as much as it used to.

The trees and grass grew as if nothing was wrong in the world. On the contrary, the world was greener than ever before. There were no more running cars, no more active power plants, no more… well, just no more civilization. Or, at least, there were none to her knowledge. For all she knew, she was the last one alive. The only proof that human-kind once existed were the shells of once great cities. The lesser towns just disappeared, buried under the sand that the wind carried along – sometimes the snow. Where she was at the moment, she did not know, but what she did know was that she was just in Manhattan about a month ago and she has never seen anything more tragic –

Not even when she was forced to kill her own parents. But of course, by that point, they were all ready dead – she was there when they first died, her mom’s ankle was barely nipped and her father’s hand was bitten. That was all it took. She saw their faces fall, their eyes lose that lively gleam, and they knew their fate.

She did not wait until their last real breaths – afterwards they would just turn into cannibalistic, brain-dead monsters that functioned like a person, but not really, so – she killed them right away. She was no expert at the process of turning, but she wanted them to go with the least amount of pain as possible. One bullet to each of their heads and the task was done (but not before she took a metal bat to the heads of those two, damned, rotting corpses that just seemed to have come out of nowhere). Her parents died twice that day.

She had learned, over the years, that people were susceptible to turning with the smallest indirect contact, be it a touch to a small cut, an inhalation of their air… that death knew no bounds. Once a person contracted the virus, they would slowly die. Their nervous system was the last thing to go, so whoever fell victim to the virus was conscious through it all.

And then came the post-mortem attack.

The virus somehow takes over the nervous system and revives the body. The person, fundamentally, was alive again, capable of breathing, moving, eating, and anything but thought.

She had watched her fair share of deaths. Over the years, she made friends, but all of that connection, that emotion and joy of finding out that she was not the last one standing, was nothing but short lived.

She had also learned that she was not qualified go be labeled as a person.

Scars littered the expanse of her arms and legs. Some were short and shallow – like paper-cuts, and some were four to five long and once ran an inch or two deep – gashes from when she let her guard down at night. All of the others came in the patterns of crescent moons, from when she went into town in search for rations and ammunition.

Most of the time, she came up empty handed.
